Without enough sleep, our health suffers. It is an invaluable resource that allows our body to rest, heal, and rejuvenate. Getting at least 7 hours every night is crucial to having a healthy mind and body, and especially a strong immune system.
.
In fact, research found that adults who slept less than 6 hours a night were 4x more likely to get a cold than those who slept more than 7 hours (Ref. 1).
.
With a pandemic on our hands, some argue that we need sleep now, more than ever.
.
Additionally, without enough sleep, you face an increased risk of issues like depression, increased weight gain, inflammation, decreased ability to focus, increased risk of cancer, dementia, & Alzheimer’s disease.
.
Unfortunately, many people don’t get adequate sleep. That’s where good sleep hygiene and natural sleep aids come in.
.
It’s very important to have a routine sleep/wake cycle, practice good sleep hygiene (avoiding excess stimulants like coffee, especially after 2pm, avoid electronics 2 hours before bedtime, for that matter, it’s best to get electronics out of the bedroom... I struggle with this, my phone goes under my nightstand 😬).
.
Thankfully, good sleep hygiene practices combined with natural sleep aids can make a huge difference in sleep.
.
Supplements that may be helpful to promote relaxation, enhance sleep, and increase time spent in deep sleep include: calcium, magnesium (magnesium glycinate at dinner and magnesium chloride at bedtime), valerian root, and melatonin.
.
Also, essential oils such as lavender and bergamot can have a calming and relaxing effect.
.
Sufficient sleep is one of the most important things we have to have if we want to protect our immune system and our overall health!
.
Stay tuned for more ways to optimize your health.
